CIC News 2025 | Re-opening of NTNP is Postponed
CIC News 2025 | Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP)
The Northwest Territories Nominee Program (NTNP) is an immigration program operated by the Government of Northwest Territories (NWT) in partnership with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It allows the territory to nominate individuals with the skills, education, and work experience needed to contribute to the economy and fill labor market gaps in the Northwest Territories.
NTNP Announcement and Federal Immigration Changes
NTNP Postponement (January 16, 2025):
The Northwest Territories government announced the NTNP would not reopen as planned on January 16, 2025.
Originally, 100 applications were to be accepted in the first intake period for permanent residence nominations.
The revised reopening date will be announced soon.
Reason for Postponement:
On January 15, 2025, the federal government reduced the NTNP allocation for 2025 to 150 nominations, down from 300 in 2024.
The reduction aligns with broader cuts to the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) targets in 2025.
Federal Immigration Changes:
PNP Landings Target (2025): Reduced to 55,000, a 50% decrease from 110,000 in 2024.
Express Entry Allocations (2025): Increased to 124,680, up from 110,770 in 2024.
Federal focus shifted to “In-Canada Focus” and “Federal Economic Priorities,” emphasizing French-speaking immigrants and those in healthcare and trades.
NTNP Next Steps:
Due to the reduced allocation, the territorial government is re-assessing the program’s plans for 2025 and will provide updates.
